A member of the Highway Patrol Group (HPG) 7 was killed in a collision with a passenger bus at the national highway of the City of Naga, Cebu.
Police Executive Master Sergeant Antonio Sando was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital for the fatal wounds he sustained on February 1, 2026.
Sando got wedged in the left side of the passenger bus on impact.
Based on investigation of the City of Naga Police, the victim was headed home in Carcar City after his duty. He was driving the motorcycle issued by the Philippine National Police (PNP).
However, upon reaching Barangay Inoburan, a passenger bus traveling from the opposite direction crashed into the motorcycle. The bus was traveling on the lane where the motorcycle was traversing.
Police Lt. Col. Verniño Noserale said that based on witnesses and CCTV footages, the bus was behind a sport utility vehicle (SUV) and two sedans. The front camera of the second sedan showed that the first sedan stopped abruptly. Based on the rear camera of the sedan, the SUV behind rammed into the vehicle and ended in a smashup.
The passenger bus tried to evade the smashup, maneuvered to the left, and reached the other lane.
Noserale added that the bus was moving on speed.
Another motorist traveling behind the victim was injured.
It was reported to be a minor injury.
The 43-year-old bus driver went emotional while apologizing to the family of the victim.
The victim was placed under autopsy.
A case for reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and damage to properties will be filed by the police against the driver.
Meanwhile, the drivers of the SUV and the second sedan have reached an amicable settlement. However, police are tracking down the first sedan which left the scene during the incident.
Police seek to determine what could have caused the driver of the first sedan to apply an abrupt stop.
