Residents of Calayan town in Cagayan province have started earning extra income by gathering seaweed that grows along the rocky shore, locals said.

The seaweed, which clings to rocks near the sea, has become easy to collect and is now selling well in local markets. Vendors sell it for about P15 per bundle, residents said.

Locals said the seaweed is popular as food. It is often added to fish sour soup, mixed with eggs, or prepared as a simple salad.

Residents said the seaweed began to grow in December 2025 and has continued to spread along the coast, making it accessible for daily harvesting.
