A woman has surrendered to police in connection with the killing of a police officer and her eight-year-old son, as authorities said the case that shocked central Luzon is now considered solved, pending the filing of charges.
The suspect turned herself in to authorities in Quezon City and is now under interrogation by the Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit of the Quezon City Police District. Police said the woman was present at the house where the crime allegedly took place.
“Nakonsensiya na po talaga ako at natatakot ako,” the suspect said during questioning.
Authorities said the woman is the sister of the former police officer who is married to the agent involved in the sale of the vehicle owned by the victim, Police Senior Master Sergeant Diane Marie Mollenido. Police said four suspects are now in custody.
The surrender came as the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) declared the case closed. DILG Secretary Jonvic Remulla said investigators believe money was a key motive behind the killing.
Police said the suspects were allegedly interested in the proceeds from the sale of the vehicle owned by Mollenido. Authorities said the money was not handed over to the victim and that she was later shot. Her son, John Ysmael, was also killed.
Investigators said the suspect couple were wedding godparents to Mollenido and her husband. Police added that the victim and her husband had been separated for three years.
Authorities said John Mollenido, the husband of the victim, remains a person of interest and is in police custody as investigators look into the immediate cremation of the victims’ remains.
Police said they are still searching for the firearm used in the killing and will also examine the mobile phones of the victims as part of the continuing investigation.
