The General Santos City Police Office (GSCPO) has heightened security measures following a series of shooting incidents in the city early in 2026.

One of these incidents was the killing of a 32-year-old tricycle driver in Barangay City Heights on Monday, February 2, 2026.

Police said the victim was transporting his four passengers when motorcycle-riding assailants shot them upon reaching Aparente Street.

Investigators said the suspects took advantage of a stop at a traffic light, pulling close to the tricycle and firing two shots.

The first bullet struck the driver while the second hit 24-year-old female passenger, a registered nurse from Sultan Kudarat who was caught in the incident.

This incident is one of the four shooting cases recorded in the city from January 1 to February 2, 2026, which alarmed the police.

“Talagang nakaka-alarma sa lugar. That’s why ang ating City Intelligence Unit, nag-conduct ng crime prevention measures dito sa Gensan City. Chokepoint, oplan bakal sita, ating flag down operations. Gabi-gabi naman yan. Lahat ng officers umiikot,” GSCPO Director, Col. Nicomedes Olaivar Jr., said.

GSCPO has directed other police units to monitor closely motorcycles that could be used in criminal activities since most of the suspects involved in the shooting incidents operate as riding-in-tandem.

“Ang Traffic Enforcement Unit at sa City Mobile Force Company ongoing (operation) araw-araw. Nanghuli ng motor na ginagamit bilang element ng riding-in-tandem sa krimen,” Olaivar said.

However, police admitted that identifying motorcycle-riding suspects is challenging due to low-quality CCTV footage.

Police will coordinate with the barangays in upgrading their CCTV systems to aid investigations.

Olaivar lauded the performance of his station commanders and expressed confidence that they can solve crimes.
