Tourism activities in Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur were suspended on Thursday, February 5, 2026, as preemptive evacuations continue in the island barangays due to the possible effects of Tropical Storm #BasyangPH.
The local government ordered the suspension of island hopping, visits to the Enchanted River, and other tourism-related activities as precautionary measure amid continuous rains and unfavorable sea conditions.
Preemptive evacuation efforts have also been intensified, particularly in island barangays.
Residents living across island nearby were ordered to evacuate and move to safer locations.
In Barangay San Juan, nearly 100 families are currently staying at a small evacuation center while at least 148 families from Sitio Mahaba were evacuated, according to barangay officials.
“Ang uban didto sa pilas sitio tungod kay dili niya kaya i-accommodate ang area…Mostly ginahimo ni namo dili lang karon basta adunay bagyo preemptive time naa nani sila,” Barangay San Juan Chairman Andres Gadat Jr. said.
Residents said they are accustomed to evacuating whenever severe weather strikes and feel safer staying in evacuation centers as the storm approaches.
“Makapuyo na unta mi nga dili mag bakwit bakwit kay lisod kaayo mag sige ngadto ari. Maka puyo unta ug sakto nga dili mag bakwit,” one of the evacuees, Felix Jabagat, said.
Several residents in Barangay Aquino, who are on the opposite island, were evacuated using a large boat.
“Sukad atong galinog ug kusog gilawom na siya. Naniguro lang ko kay among balay naa baya sa tubig,” another evacuee, Bing Casipag, said.
Some evacuees were housed temporarily at Hinatuan Southern College and were given assistance by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).
The local government also enforced a no-sailing policy, prohibiting fishermen from going out to sea while Signal No. 2 remains in effect.
Fishermen secured and pulled their boats to prevent damage from strong waves.
“Kailangan makinig sa advice ng LGU at sa lagat ng mangingisda please wag muna kayo pumalaot baka ma disgrasya,” Hinatuan Mayor Tito Cañedo III said.
