The province of Surigao del Sur has been placed under a state of calamity due to the massive damage caused by flooding from #BasyangPH.
The declaration was based on the resolution passed by the Provincial Board on Monday, February 9, 2026.
Based on initial and partial report from the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO), at least 89,816 families or 336,671 individuals were affected, representing 52.44 percent of the province’s population.
Around 101,324 individuals or 30 percent of the affected population have been displaced inside and outside of evacuation centers.
The resolution said with the fast-rising floods coupled with strong currents, landslides and soil erosion occurred, which blocked several roads in the towns of Cantilan, Madrid, Lanuza, Cortes, Tandag City, Tago, San Miguel, and Bayabas, the area where #BasyangPH made landfall.
The provincial government also reported that two people died – a 10-year-old child in Cortes town who suffered from multiple trauma and asphyxiation after getting buried in a landslide in upland Tigao and a 53-year-old woman who was carried away by floodwaters in Carmen.
As of February 8, 2026, up to 397 houses were damaged and 37 were destroyed.
The damage to provincial road and national roads was estimated to be around P211 million and P100 million, respectively.
On the other hand, the damage to main and critical lifeline infrastructures was pegged at more than P816 million.
he resolution said the hardest hit was the agri-fishery sector with damages amounting to more than P590 million worth of high value crops, farm equipment, and machineries established infrastructure.
The provincial government said the total estimated damage to lifeline infrastructure residences, roads, tourism, agriculture, and fisheries across the province reached more than P1.4 billion.
The resolution said the declaration of a state of calamity will allow the provincial government to expedite relief, recovery, and rehabilitation efforts for affected communities.
Governor Johnny Pimentel said the provincial government continues to work closely with all agencies to ensure immediate assistance reaches those who need it most.
