The nephew of a mayor in Maguindanao del Sur was killed while the mayor’s younger brother was injured after they were shot on Tuesday, February 17, 2026.
According to the secretary of the mayor of Shariff Aguak town, the fatality was identified as Datu Gara Ampatuan, a nephew of Mayor Mitra Ampatuan.
The person injured was identified as Datu Mama Ampatuan, the mayor’s younger brother.
Based on investigation, the victims were heading home from Cotabato City on board their vehicle when they were shot by unidentified assailants upon reaching the place of incident.
The victims’ driver managed to bring the vehicle to Datu Unsay to seek help after the attack.
Investigation into the incident continues to identify the perpetrators and determine the motive.
