A basketball game in Pozorrubio, Pangasinan turned tragic after a 12-year-old boy died from electrocution while watching a match, causing an investigation into safety conditions at the community court.
The incident happened shortly before 8 p.m. on Saturday, February 14, 2026, at a basketball court in Barangay Talogtog, Pozorrubio.
Police said the boy was seated near the basketball goal with two other children when he was electrocuted after touching a metal post.
Authorities later found an exposed electrical wire in contact with the basketball goal, which they believe caused the electrocution.
“Sobrang hirap. Mabait na bata ang anak ko. Biglaan ang nangyari,” Ginalyn Bautista, the victim’s mother, said.
Barangay officials said they were not aware of any exposed wiring before the incident.
“Hindi kami aware na mayroon na palang nabalatan na kable. Eksakto kumapit ’yung bata doon sa tubo kaya nakuryente siya,” Lara Garcia, Sangguniang Kabataan chairperson of Barangay Talogtog, said.
The victim’s family questioned how a live wire ended up near the playing area and urged for accountability.
“Malaking tanong bakit may live wire doon. Tapos sabi ng mga nandoon mayroong lang styro na pinangtakip. Managot ang dapat managot,” Bautista said.
Garcia said the electrical lines in the area were checked before the start of the basketball league, and suggested the wire may have been exposed before the incident.
Barangay officials said they inspected the basketball court’s electrical wiring after the incident.
The barangay council also extended financial assistance and condolences to the victim’s family.
Police said they are continuing to investigate the incident to determine possible liability and prevent similar accidents in the future.
