Authorities arrested a Mongolian national studying to become a pilot in Iba, Zambales for alleged espionage after he was accused of taking unauthorized photos during flight training.
According to official intelligence information, the foreign student took photos of Iba Airport and the Palauig River while conducting flight exercises. Authorities said what the student was doing raised security concerns.
The student was brought to the Bureau of Immigration for the processing of his deportation. He has not issued any statement.
National Security Adviser Eduardo Año said the foreign national allegedly hid his military background and past service with the People's Liberation Army of China. Año added that the suspect reportedly holds a jet fighter license from a PLA Air Force aviation authority university.
Authorities said the man’s actions did not match his declared purpose for staying in the country.
Año said foreign nationals may study in the Philippines as long as they remain transparent and follow Philippine laws.
