The Western Mindanao Naval Command (WMNC) seized alleged smuggled cigarettes worth more than P55 million in separate operations in the waters off Zamboanga and Sulu over the weekend.
WMNC personnel intercepted a vessel loaded with undocumented cigarettes approximately one nautical mile south of Marungas Island, Sulu on Saturday, February 21, 2026.
Authorities found at least 600 master cases of assorted cigarettes upon inspection.
The items were reportedly bound for Dipolog, Zamboanga del Norte from Jolo, Sulu.
The value of the vessel and its cargo was estimated at P34.6 million.
On the same day, WMNC also intercepted another vessel near Little Sta. Cruz, Zamboanga City loaded with 336 master cases and 45 reams of suspected smuggled cigarettes worth nearly P20 million.
It can be recalled that authorities seized more than P1.5 million worth of alleged smuggled cigarettes in Zamboanga City on February 14, 2026.
All items seized were turned over to the Bureau of Customs (BOC).
"These operations underscore our commitment to securing our borders and protecting the nation's economy from the detrimental effects of smuggling," WMNC said.
