Residents near a former quarry site in Barangay Lagtang, Talisay City, Cebu expressed worry over possible landslide due to ground cracks found in the area.
Barangay Lagtang Chairman Chester Salcedo and Councilman Randy Fernandez said that they have the area monitored while awaiting action from the Local Government Unit (LGU) and Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) 7.
One of the residents at the foot of the mountain is Kim Ebrado who expressed fear over an apparent crack, yet she has no plans of leaving the area.
Ebrado said that there are at least seven households located in the area.
Barangay officials have urged the residents to evacuate in case of rains, regardless of intensity.
The mountain with a visible ground crack is being quarried for the past 10 years, but was stalled in July 2025.
Governor Pamela Baricuatro ordered the suspension of quarrying in Cebu to facilitate comprehensive review of operations.
As of posting time, operation has not resumed.
Heavy equipment were seen in the vicinity, and that workers were around. However, Salcedo said that the area is not a quarry operation but a site development for a road project.
Talisay City Mayor Gerald Anthony (Samsam) Gullas, in December 2025, announced that he will have the area checked by MGB 7, Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO), Talisay City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, and Department of Public Works and Highway.
The apparent crack was observed after Typhoon Tino lashed Cebu in November 2025.
Among those that the mayor met in December 2025 are officials of an upland subdivision.
PENRO Head Rodel Bontuyan said that additional assessment on ground cracks near the subdivision is needed, and the evacuation of residents 50 meters from the apparent crack.
“At that time November, usa sa mga nakit-an, kining sa property sa Vista Grande, developed by Sta.
Bontuyan confirmed that the Talisay City LGU has already sought assistance from them. However, it cannot be determined yet whether the quarry on the area caused the crack. But Bontuyan said that the quarry operator hired a geologist for a continuing private review on the crack. PENRO awaits result.
Finding the appropriate solution is on for the technical action on the problem in the area and rehabilitation, as well as determining who will rehabilitate the area.
In December 2025, Gullas said, they agreed on placing sandbag deflectors so rainwater would not seep into the cracks, as a short-term solution.
It was learned that experts from MGB 7 and PENRO have conducted a geo-technical survey and assessment.
