Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Vince Dizon said a diversion road will be constructed after a portion of the road in Lake Sebu, South Cotabato collapsed following torrential rains brought by the shear line last week.
Dizon said President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ordered the immediate repair of the affected road to ensure safe and faster travel for residents.
“Dalawa naman yung paulit-ulit sinasabi ni PBBM. Una, mabilis [dapat] tayo magresponde kasi buhay ng mga kababayan natin ang apektado. Pangalawa, ‘yung mga kailangan ma-maintain natin ng mabilis at maayos [ang mga kalsada],” Dizon said when he inspected the area .
The portion of the road collapsed on February 13, 2026, possibly due to continuous heavy rains and mining activities in the area.
During inspection, several stranded motorists were seen attempting to cross the damaged road.
Dizon questioned local officials and engineers about the absence of slope protection along the affected section of the road.
DPWH said a six-kilometer diversion road will be constructed from the national highway to bypass the collapsed area.
The diversion road is expected to be completed within the year.
“Meron tayong 6 kilometers gagawin diversion road mula sa national highway para iiwasan natin yung nag-collapse na area , hopefully this year matatapos natin yun,” Dizon said.
