The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) confirmed a lava-collapse pyroclastic density current (PDC) at Mayon Volcano afernoon on Friday, February 27, 2026.
State volcanologists said the PDC followed a lava collapse at the volcano’s summit around 2 p.m. Alert Level 3 remains in effect, indicating increased unrest and the possibility of hazardous eruptions.
In Camalig town, Mayor Caloy Baldo said monitoring by the municipal public information office captured “more visible pyroclastic density currents (PDCs), or ‘uson,’” at noon on the same day. He urged residents to wear face masks and stay indoors unless it is absolutely necessary to go outside, warning that ashfall may occur.
PHIVOLCS said explosive activity remains possible within days or weeks.
Meanwhile, the Philippine Red Cross said it has personnel present in nine of the 12 evacuation centers within and around the six-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone.
The humanitarian group said its teams are on standby for possible escalation, with welfare desks, first aid, psychosocial support, and essential relief items ready for deployment.
PRC Chairman Richard J. Gordon urged the public to follow government advisories.
“Preparedness saves lives. We must not wait for disaster to strike before we act. The Red Cross is ready—but communities must also do their part by staying alert and following safety protocols,” he said.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation as volcanic activity persists.
