A resident was injured slightly after a grenade was thrown and exploded near a newly constructed fast-food restaurant in Barangay Malakas, Lamitan City, Basilan around 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 3, 2026.
Based on initial investigation, a security guard was on duty in front of the establishment when he heard a loud explosion around 10 meters away.
However, the guard reportedly did not notice the perpetrators.
The Lamitan City Police Station condemned the incident and assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway to identify the suspect and determine the motive.
After the incident, police officers responded immediately to secure the area and prevent further harm.
Responding officers noticed that the glass wall of the establishment was shattered and the concrete wall sustained holes believed to have been hit by shrapnel.
Investigators are now building up a case, gathering pieces of evidence, and interviewing possible witnesses.
“We have intensified monitoring and evaluation of CCTV cameras not only within the establishment but also in nearby areas and strategic locations across Lamitan City to trace the movements of the suspects before and after the incident,” police said.
Police officers are also coordinating with other law enforcement units and intelligence groups to expedite the probe.
“We would like to inform everyone to remain vigilant at all times. We encourage the public to report any suspicious individuals, activities, or unattended objects immediately to the nearest police station. Your cooperation is vital in helping us safeguard our city,” police added.
