The 11th Infantry Division (11ID) has said there are no plans to establish a US military base in Sulu following the recent visit of representatives from a US Marine special operations unit.
11ID clarified that the visit of the Marine Special Operations Company-Philippines (MSOC-P), a unit under the United States Marine Forces Special Operations Command (MARSOC), to the headquarters of Joint Task Force Orion on March 6, 2026, was a courtesy and coordination engagement.
The military maintained that security operations in Sulu remain under the full authority of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).
11ID also said that the visit provided an opportunity to bolster coordination and reinforce the partnership between MSOC-P and the 11ID as part of the continuing collaboration in promoting peace and security.
“The engagement focused on professional dialogue and cooperation on security matters, aimed at strengthening our collective ability to maintain peace and stability,” 11ID said.
11ID said the Philippine Army remains committed to protecting the sovereignty of the Philippines and welfare of the people of Sulu.
“We also recognize the deep historical experiences of the Tausug people, and we assure the public that all engagements are conducted with respect for our communities, our laws, and our national sovereignty,” 11ID added.
11ID added that it continues to work closely with local government units, community leaders, and partner agencies in sustaining peace, security, and development across the province.
