Fifteen people, including pedestrians, were injured when a private vehicle rammed into a public utility jeepney (PUJ) in the City of Naga in Cebu.

The incident in Barangay Tuyan at 9 a.m. on March 9, 2026 was captured by Closed Circuit Television Camera (CCTV).

Footage showed the private vehicle driving straight into the PUJ that was on a full stop. The impact was so strong that it pushed the PUJ to its side and sent into the air the man standing by the PUJ. The man had reportedly just approached the vehicle at that time looking for loose change.

As also shown in the CCTV footage, the incident happened so fast that the woman standing by the PUJ while carrying a child did not have time to react as the PUJ pushed her to the ground as it tilted to its side. 

Two other children were also standing by the road at the time of the accident. 

Based on initial investigation, the PUJ stopped in the area to pick up passengers for Cebu City.

Meanwhile, the private vehicle was heading south and swerved to the other lane until it hit the PUJ.

Among those hurt were the driver of the PUJ and his six passengers, including two senior citizens and a five-year-old boy; five pedestrians; and the three people on board the private vehicle.

The driver of the private vehicle was arrested.

According to authorities, he would be made to undergo a drug test and breathalyzer test.

The driver reportedly said his steering wheel had malfunctioned.

“Statement ra man gud niya… possible sad ni nga nakatulog, pero ang iyang statement… nagdepende pa mi sa iyang statement… inisyal pa man ni, pero iyang sulti nga nigahi ang iyang ano (manobela), that’s why among ipa-drug test ug breathalyzer,” said PLt. Col. Dexter Calacar, chief of the City of Naga Police Station.

Calacar reminded vehicle owners and drivers to always check their vehicles before traveling.

“Akong reminder nga i-check gyud nato atong sakyanan, safety ba ang ilahang sakyanan, before ta mosakay… and another thing, hinay-hinay sa pagdagan, magbantay sila, mas the more sila magbantay, kay ang Naga open na sya kaayo, daghan ang possible nga madisgrasya, hinuon, kay out of control man kon kusog na kaayong dagan… initially nato, kusog gyud iyang dagan,” he said.
