Authorities have warned the public anew, especially those in the vulnerable sector, against illnesses that may be caused by exposure to heat.

Weather bureau PAGASA has already declared the end of La Niña.

The illnesses the hot weather may bring include heat cramps, exhaustion, and heat stroke.

Among the symptoms of a heat stroke are headache, dizziness, vomiting, and high body temperature.

If a person experiences these symptoms, he or she must be taken to a shady area, be given water, and, if necessary, be brought to the nearest health center or hospital.

“Kung mangyari ito, kailangan agad dalhin sa malamig na lugar, ilagay sa shady area, painumin ng tubig at kung kinakailangan, dalhin agad sa pinakamalapit na health center at hospital,” said Dr. Maria Socorro Quiñon, head of the Iloilo Provincial Health Office.

Socorro said senior citizens and those with hypertension must also take extra care, and must take their maintenance medicine regularly.

She also advised avoiding exposure to the sun, especially from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“Iwasan ang sobrang exposure sa araw, lalo na sa mga oras 10am hanggang sa 4pm,” Socorro said.

Two residents in Iloilo, Janjan and Virginia, said they will take steps to protect themselves from the heat.

“Gumagamit ako ng sombrero. Pagdating sa bahay, pahinga lang. Inom ng tubig upang lumamig ang pakiramdam,” Janjan said.

“Hindi nagbibilad sa araw at nananatili lang sa silong. Electric fan, inom ng maraming tubig,” Virginia said.
