At least 11 students were injured after a portable butane stove exploded during a birthday celebration at a restaurant in Barangay Caranglaan, Dagupan City on Thursday, March 12, 2026, authorities said.
The students had gathered at the restaurant after a school activity to celebrate the birthday of one of their classmates. A few moments later, the butane stove placed on their table exploded suddenly, reportedly due to gas overpressure, creating a fireball that hit the group.
“While celebrating, kinakantahan na nila ng ‘Happy Birthday’ song ‘yung kanilang classmate. Gas burner, nag-leak kaya nagkaroon ng explosion,” PCPT. Eric Dela Cruz, commander of the Dagupan City Police Station 2, said.
Restaurant staff said the incident happened suddenly, causing panic among customers.
“Biglaan po kasi. Andun ako sa likod. Pagpunta ko dito, ayun nagtakbuhan na lahat ang tao kasi natakot na lahat,” Romel Tumbaga, a restaurant employee, said.
The victims suffered burns and were rushed to the nearest hospital. Eight students were admitted for treatment, while three were immediately discharged after receiving medical care.
“Out of sa walo, ‘yung dalawa hindi naman kritikal, serious injury. Due for operation sila,” Dela Cruz said.
Restaurant management said the incident was the first of its kind in the establishment and that their equipment is regularly inspected.
“Palagi po namin ‘yan chine-check po. Ino-off tapos nililinis po lagi namin,” Tumbaga said.
Police said the restaurant owner has agreed to shoulder the hospital expenses of the injured students.
“In coordination with the admin officer ng restaurant, nag-initial ‘yung may-ari na iso-shoulder nila ‘yung hospital expenses ng mga injured person,” Dela Cruz said.
Authorities advised the public to remain cautious when using gas-powered equipment in restaurants and other establishments to prevent similar incidents.
The students are yet to release a statement, as of press time.
