Three individuals linked to the extremist Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) and Dawlah Islamiyah (DI) surrendered to authorities during an operation in Mamasapano, Maguindanao del Sur.
The surrender was facilitated by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI).
NBI said the operation was carried out after the agency received information that certain individuals affiliated with the extremist groups operating in the area had expressed intention to return to the folds of the law.
“According to intelligence sources, the individuals sought a secure and neutral channel for surrender due to fears of possible retaliation from remaining BIFF and DI elements in the area,” NBI said.
NBI agents and other partner agencies then carried out what it refers to as protective extraction operation to ensure the safety of individuals surrendering, as well as that of the operating team.
The three were alleged members of BIFF/DI-Karialan faction.
During the surrender, they turned over several high-powered firearms and weapons, including rifles, grenade launchers, and ammunition.
After the operation, the three individuals were brought to a facility where they were placed under initial debriefing and security processing.
NBI Director, Atty. Melvin Matibag, lauded the team for the successful operation.
“This successful surrender demonstrates that even those who have once taken the path of armed extremism can still choose peace. The National Bureau of Investigation remains committed to supporting government efforts that provide safe and lawful avenues for individuals who wish to abandon violence and reintegrate into society,” Matibag said.
