A family traveling from Tayug to the Señor Divino Tesoro Shrine in Calasiao, Pangasinan, paid P120 for a tricycle ride, or P30 per passenger, higher than the usual fare.
“Mataas masyado, mahirap, 30 daw isa.” Lilia Martinez, one of the passengers, said.
The Calasiao Public Order and Safety Office (POSO) said the minimum fare for tricycles remains P20 despite rising fuel prices. Temporary fare hikes require an official notice from the local government.
“Babantayan natin ‘yan, alamin po nila ang body sticker para mapuntahan namin sa paradahan nila,” Philip Pasaoa, POSO supervisor, said.
Some Tricycle Operators and Drivers Associations (TODA) are requesting a P10 increase, citing that the P20 fare is no longer enough amid the high cost of fuel.
“Bente ang minimum pero gawin naming P30 kasi hindi naman kaya, kung bente wala talaga talo kami,” Joel Lamsen, a tricycle driver, said.
Operators warned that if fares stay at P20, some tricycles may stop operating in the coming days.
GMA Regional TV continues to seek a response from the local government regarding the TODA’s request, as of press time.
