Two alleged communist rebels were killed in a firefight in Lanuza, Surigao del Sur on Sunday, March 22, 2026.

According to the Army’s 4th Infantry Division (4ID), the troops of the 36th Infantry Battalion were conducting an operation in the hinterlands of Barangay Nurcia when they engaged suspected members of the New People’s Army (NPA) in an exchange of fire.

4ID identified the fatalities as alias “Ka Rex” and alias “Ka Bunso,” both affiliated with SRSDG Westland of the NPA’s Northeastern Mindanao Regional Committee (NEMRC).

The military also seized at least four high-powered firearms from the clash site.

“The said encounter forced the remaining CTG elements to withdraw, leaving behind the casualties, while information provided by concerned residents who had been subjected to threats and extortion proved instrumental in the successful conduct of the operation,” 4ID said.

After the encounter, the troops secured the area immediately to ensure the safety of nearby communities and prevent further threats.

“This successful operation highlights the effectiveness of our focused military operations and the invaluable support of the local communities. We will continue to intensify our efforts to dismantle the remaining CTG elements and ensure the safety and security of our area of responsibility,” 401st Infantry Brigade Commander, Col. Glenn Joy Aynera, said.
