The Cagayan de Oro City Council has approved a fare increase for motorela in the city, which will depend on the prevailing gasoline prices.
The proposed fare increase has been approved following deliberations due to the rising prices of petroleum products.
Under the approved ordinance, the base fare will remain at P10 if fuel prices range between P65 to P75 per liter.
The fare will increase to P12 if prices reach P76 to P85 per liter, and P13 if gasoline prices skyrocket between P86 to P95.
“Ang rate nga gitan-aw kagahapon naa pa sa P83 karon nag increase naman ug P9 sa ato pa P13 na sila karon base sa bag-ong approve nag ordinance,” Councilor Eric Salcedo, chairman of the Committee on Transportation, said.
Salcedo explained that drivers are not yet allowed to implement the approved fare increase. He clarified that motorela drivers must secure an updated fare matrix first from the local government before they can start collecting the new rates.
“Hantod nga dili sila makadawat ug taripa. Sa pagkakaron ang ilang plete is naa pa sa P10 pero depende nana sa pagsinabtanay sa pasahero,” Salcedo added.
Motorela drivers welcomed the approval of the fare increase.
“Okay nami ana basta kung kada naay pagmahal sa gasoline naay piso tingali ok nana siya,” a driver, Jesus Pruta, Jr., said.
Other drivers expressed hesitation in charging higher fares, acknowledging the financial burden it may place on passengers.
“Naay moplete ug diyes dawaton gihapon namo kay maulaw man sab ta mo ingon sa pasahero nga dungagi ni kay mao nani among bag-ong pletihan,” another driver, Danny Pulinda, added.
