Police have identified two persons of interest in the shooting of a businesswoman in Barangay Poblacion A in Dueñas, Iloilo.
The suspect, police said, may have been a gun-for-hire.
“Pwedeng gun-for-hire. Yan ang ating sinisikap nating matukoy sa ngayon,” said Lt. Col. Rolando Araño, spokesperson of the Iloilo Police Provincial Office.
The police are also looking into information that the victim, Marigold Jamelo, and her family received threats prior to the shooting.
Two angles are being looked at - crime of passion and link to Jamelo’s business of buying and selling cars.
On March 23, 2026, Jamelo drove to Dueñas town with two mechanics to test a vehicle. However, the car overheated, which was why they stopped near a repair shop.
The suspect who was in another car approached and peppered Jamelo's vehicle with bullets, hitting Jamelo and one of the mechanics.
A woman who was inside her house located near the crime scene, was also hit.
The suspect sped off in the direction of Pototan town.
Based on accounts of witnesses, it appears that Jamelo was really the target. The suspect fired 23 times.
Empty shells of a 5.56mm gun were recovered from the crime scene.
“Tinututukan natin ngayon ang mga information na ating natatanggap,” Araño said.
According to Joseph Poral, barangay captain of Tacas in Jaro, Jameo does not have any derogatory record in the barangay. It has reportedly been a while since she went home there.
“Noong kabataan niya, dito siya nakatira kasi nandito ang kanyang magulang, mga kaanak at mga pinsan. Nang nakapag-asawa siya, doon na siya tumira sa City Proper,” Poral said.
