Tricycle drivers in Davao City are pushing for a fare increase of P5 to P10 amid the rising prices of petroleum products.
A group of tricycle drivers has reportedly requested the City Council on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, to grant an additional P10 to the minimum fare, which is currently set at P10.
The group said the last fare increase for tricycles was implemented in 2020.
“Nadawat na nato ang letter, isulod nato siya for first reading sa next session unya after which, after the Holy Week, pwede na mag-conduct og committee hearing,” Committee on Transportatin Chairman, Councilor Jose Marie Bernardo Baluran, said.
Members of the Matina Tricycle Operators and Drivers Association (MATRIODA) also said they would go to City Hall to request a fare increase and obtain a legal basis to avoid conflicts with passengers.
“Muhangyo mi didto kay ang uban daw naa nadaw taripa nga patas-an, kami muadtuay pami og City Hall muhangyo mi didto kay lisod man pud nga mupataas sa among pamilite unya wala mi taripa. Sa Dumalag, 10 na dati pwede gihapon na kinse, baynte. Okay ra ang kinse. Ang among Times, 20 mana, pwede 30hon, 25 kay layo-layo man ang sa Times,” MATRIODA Treasurer, Evan Gaking, said.
A commuter said she understands the drivers’ situation.
“For me po, kay nakasabot jud ko kay nagtaas man gud ang gasolina so okay lang po kay dili man gud nila, kanang ilang quota gud everyday esp. basig dili mahabol ba. So, okay lang sa akoa nga magtaas,” a commuter, Hannah Ramon, said.
Some passengers also reportedly pay more than the minimum fare voluntarily in support of the drivers’ situation.
“Naay muhatag kinse, baynte, pero apiki gihapon kay taas kaayo ang gasolina. Di gyud mi mularga diri nga dili ma seating kay malugi man mi. Ang ubang pasahero makasabot na pero naa gyud gihapoy dili makasabot,” Gaking added.
Meanwhile, tricycle drivers are taking measures to save fuel, such as waiting for passengers at their terminals instead of continuously roaming the streets.
