Fuel prices in Basco have surged sharply, with diesel now selling for more than ₱143 per liter as global oil costs continue to rise.
On Wednesday, the price of diesel reached ₱143.70 per liter in the capital town of Batanes. Gasoline prices, meanwhile, ranged from ₱120.50 to ₱121.50 per liter.
Local fuel sellers said the high cost is not only due to the increase in oil prices but also the additional expense of transporting fuel from the mainland to the island province.
Because fuel must be shipped to Batanes, station owners said they are forced to add more charges to cover transport costs.
Some residents also fear that if fuel prices continue to rise, fewer ships may travel from the mainland to Batanes, which could further affect the supply of goods in the province.
