Two people were arrested at a checkpoint in Barangay Tambler, General Santos City for allegedly transporting wildlife species illegally .

According to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources Office-SOCCSKSARGEN (DENR-12), authorities received information about the alleged illegal transport of wildlife species, prompting them to conduct an inspection.

During the operation, a minivan loaded with several makeshift cages containing various wildlife species was intercepted.

The suspects reportedly failed to present permits or documents authorizing the transport and possession of the animals.

Among the wildlife rescued included five Moluccan cockatoos, six yellow-crested cockatoos, four Bornean white-bearded gibbons, and two bearcats, based on assessment.

DENR-12 added that one Moluccan cockatoo and one Victoria crowned pigeon were found dead, underscoring the risks and cruelty associated with illegal wildlife transport.

The next day, police turned over the rescued animals to the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) for proper care.

DENR-12 said charges are being prepared against the suspects.
