A man who has a police record for theft was arrested for stealing a dog in Barangay Sum-ag, Bacolod City.
A video footage from a CCTV camera showed the man walking casually with two dogs in tow, one of which is a Rottweiler identified later as Chappy.
According to the sister of Chappy’s owner, the man stole the dog while Chappy was outside the house.
The owner would reportedly allow Chappy to go out of the house in the morning.
“Sa umaga, pinapalabas siya ng aking sister. That time, tinawag naman si Chappy pero hindi nakabalik. Hinanap namin,” said Crizelda Lazaro, sister of Chappy’s owner.
The 43-year-old suspect was arrested after the driver of the tricycle he flagged informed Chappy’s owner he saw the dog with the suspect.
Police recovered Chappy later from the suspect’s house.
Capt. Andy Ofalia, chief of the Bacolod City Police Station 9, said the suspect denied stealing the dog.
“Initially, sabi niya dog lover naman siya. Iyan ang kanyang dahilan pero malicious ang nakita,” Ofalia said.
The suspect was reportedly concerned about the dog being outside the house, which was why he picked Chappy up.
“Ang aso, hindi ko ninakaw. Naawa ako sa kanya na baka kunin ng ibang tao at masagasaan,” the suspect said.
But Ofalia said the suspect has a history of theft in the area based on records from Police Station 6 and 7.
Chappy’s owner decided eventually not to press charges against the suspect.
