Farmers in Davao City have reported an increase in transportation costs for agricultural products from farms to markets, which they attributed to the skyrocketing prices of fuel.
According to a report by GMA Super Radyo Davao, Barangay Malabog chairman Jessie Areja said transporters are now charging up to P5 per kilo for hauling agricultural produce due to higher fuel costs.
The transport cost previously was around P2.50 per kilo, but it went up to around P7.50 per kilo.
Farmer said the situation is affecting the prices of vegetables and other produce in public markets, as weak consumer demand prevents them from raising selling prices.
Recently, the barangay conducted a meeting with farmers to discuss and address their concerns.
The sector is also calling on the Department of Agriculture to extend assistance and provide interventions to help ease the impact of the fuel crisis.
