A woman died while her companion sustained injuries after they were shot while walking on the road in Pavia, Iloilo.
As shown in a CCTV footage, the suspect was wearing a helmet at the time of the incident. He fired at the two women as the victims were walking past him in Barangay Ungka 1 where he parked his motorcycle.
The incident happened at past 7 p.m. on April 14, 2026.
Divine Grace Castillo, a resident of Barangay San Juan, Molo was declared dead on arrival at the hospital. She sustained gunshot wounds in the head, back, and abdomen.
Her companion, John Shane Somblingo, had to undergo surgery.
Based on police investigation, the two were on their way home when shot.
A resident in the area where the shooting took place said they thought the shots they heard were the sound of fireworks as a fiesta was being celebrated at that time.
“Paglabas namin, may nakahandusay na. Akala ko nga fireworks lang kasi fiesta. Ang isa, gumagalaw pa siya. Parang nagcha-chat siya, may tinatawagan (si Shane), pero ang isa, hindi na gumagalaw,” according to “Inday.”
Police said work is one of the angles they are looking into in the investigation.
Castillo was plant manager of a cake shop while Somblingo works at human resource.
“At this point in time, ang lahat ng possibility, ang lahat ng anggulo, kinukonsidera natin iyan,” said Lt. Col. Rolando Araño, spokesperson of the Iloilo Police Provincial Office.
“Hindi muna tayo maka-conclude kung isa lang ang suspect o may kasama pa siya,” he added.
Castillo’s father chose not to issue a statement.
The captain of the barangay where she lived said Castillo did not have any derogatory record.
“Hindi nga siya lumalabas sa barangay. Wala siyang kaaway sa paligid. Nagulat nga ako na nabaril siya,” said Jose Martin Maloto, captain of Barangay San Juan.
