Several fishermen in Iligan City whose boats were damaged by #BasyangPH in February 2026 continue to appeal for assistance from the City Agriculture Office after failing to get aid from the government.
More than two months since the storm struck the city, many properties were left damaged. However, affected fisherfolk in Barangay Tambacan said they have yet to receive assistance, particularly as most of their fishing boats were destroyed during the storm.
A fisherman, Altie Ramo, said two of his motorized bancas were carried away by strong floodwaters. He is now struggling to sustain his daily livelihood.
“Ang akong gihangyo unta nga ma pulihan ang akong mga pump boat nga nawala kay wala na gyud koy panginabuhian,” Ramo said.
Because of this, the City Agriculture Office met with the group of fishermen to address their concerns. However, the office clarified that it does not have the capacity to provide pump boats.
Instead, the office is set to submit a proposal to the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR).
“Ang City Agriculture Office nakahimo na ug project proposal in the amount of 3 million pesos ato ni i-submit sa BFAR ug ubang mga ahensiya nga posibleng nga makahatag sa assistance,” City Agriculture Head, Marie Ann Beley, said.
The office also assured that it is working to provide immediate assistance to affected fisherfolk as an initial response.
The Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation (PCIC) reported that while some boats were insured, only three qualified for reimbursement.
“Ang uban wala sila na approve kay lage na-delay sila pag-report sa pag-file sa ilang damage sa ilang bangka ang gihangyo lang namo sa sunod nila pagpa-insured kung naa man kalamidad moabot hinaot ma-inform dayon among opisina,” PCIC insurance underwriter, Bryan Tampus, said.
