A 42-year-old woman was wounded after she was allegedly shot by her own son while sleeping inside their home in Bantay, Ilocos Sur, police said.

The incident happened early Sunday morning inside the victim’s bedroom.

Authorities said the 18-year-old suspect used a .38 caliber firearm and hit his mother in the face. The victim survived and is now recovering in the hospital.

The suspect reportedly admitted to the shooting after he surrendered to authorities. He told police he was not in the right state of mind at the time of the incident.

The suspect is set to face a parricide complaint. The victim has yet to issue a statement.

Police said the suspect may have been dealing with personal problems.

“Nag-surrender ‘yung anak at nagsabi na siya daw ‘yung bumaril sa kaniyang mother. ‘Yung kwento ng bata is mayroon siyang dinadalang personal problem. Ganoon nga ‘yung naging takbo, hindi niya nao-open ‘yung problema niya kahit kanino. Sinarili niya lang ‘yung problema. Much better sana kung ma-open ‘yung communication between sa parents at sa mga bata para nagagabayan natin,” Acting Bantay police chief PCPT. Donaldson Pagalanan said.
