A man died while at least 250 families were displaced after a fire razed more than 100 houses in Sitio San Isidro, Lapasan, Cagayan de Oro City evening on Monday, April 20, 2026.
The fire reportedly broke out from the house of a certain “Matmat” shortly before midnight.
Authorities said the fire spread quickly as most of the houses affected were made of light materials, prompting authorities to raise it to fourth alarm.
“Sa sobra ka dry sa panahon karon include pa kagabie nisabay pa ang hangin nagbali-bali huyop mao to ang spread sa kalayo,” Lapasan Fire Station Commander, Fire Senior Inspector Louis Roy Solamo, said.
A resident affected said children int the area reported that a couple were fighting before the fire broke out.
“Ingon nila naay nag-away nag ingon dayon sige panghipos namo diha kay hurot mo karon diha murag inana ang istorya sa mga bata wala pud ta lage kakita sa ato pa murag gituyo na sa akong huna-huna,” a resident affected, Cresilda Bagares, said.
Most residents were unable to save their belongings.
The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) also confirmed that a man died during the incident after suffering a heart attack.
“Nadala ni siya sa atong EMS sa BFP but declared dead on arrival sa NMMC. Under investigation pa man siya up to now but naa tay mga alleged nga nadungog nga naa daw jumper or illegal electrical connection,” Solamo added.
Residents affected are taking shelter temporarily at the barangay covered court.
Authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire, while the damage was estimated at more than P1 million.
