An 82-year-old man died when a fire hit a residential area in Adela Subdivision Barangay Camaman, Cagayan de Oro City on Sunday, April 26, 2026.
The fire broke out around 10 a.m. and spread quickly as the houses affected were made of light materials and built close to each other.
Witnesses said the fire started from the house of the victim, Eddie Del Rosario, where neighbors believed he was cooking at that time.
“Wala niya mabantayi kusog na kaayo ang kalayo nagsinggita pa gani siya ug tabang wala naman mo duol kay ang mga wire naputol naman,” a resident, Wilfredo Tan, said.
Del Rosario died in the incident. He reportedly managed to leave his house at first but went back inside later. His body was recovered from the restroom on the second floor.
“Nakagawas na daw to unya nibalik pa man mao na siya kasagaran ang hinungdan nga ma trap ka dili nakakabantay nga ang luyo sa imong gi agihan gikaon na sa kalayo,” Nazareth Fire Station Commander, SFO3 Flaviano Ente Jr., said.
The fire was raised to second alarm.
Around six houses and a chapel nearby were affected.
The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) said firefighting operations were made difficult by the narrow road and the many tricycles parked in the area.
BFP added that the hot weather and strong winds caused the fire to spread rapidly.
“Nakaulbo na siya pag-ayo kay tungod sa ka init sa panahon, kusog ang hangin mao naka damay pa siya ug balay sa luyo,” Ente added.
Authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire.
