Streams in the upland areas of Cebu City are drying up due to extreme weather conditions.
Water levels in several creeks have decreased gradually, including those in Barangay Bonbon.
In Managoksok, water in the stream has also dwindled.
There are still parts of the stream where carabaos can soak in but residents said the stream may completely dry up in the coming days or weeks.
“Naa silay tubod nga mo last gyud og dugay. Naa say uban nga nagsalig ra sad sa sapa. Once mahubas ang sapa, wala, mangita sila’g laing panginabuhian,” a resident, Noel Barliso, said.
The creek nearby is also close to drying up and residents use whatever water is left for their crops.
Some residents from other barangays traveled to Bonbon to wash their clothes as their own water source had reportedly dried up.
“Wala ra ba gyuy tubig didto para laba. Ang maigo ra didto para lung-ag ginagmay lang pero sa laba lisod na,” Diomedes Arcilla, a resident of another barangay, said.
It has been three months since rain was last experienced in the upland barangays, causing water sources to run dry slowly.
Residents expressed concern that the situation may worsen and affect their livelihood, especially with the expected El Niño phenomenon.
Because of this, Mayor Nestor Archival has ordered a close monitoring on the condition of upland areas.
The city has already been placed under a state of preparedness.
“MCWD atong giingnan nga i-ready na ang atong filter pumps nga duha ka buok ang usa sa north district ang usa sa south district,” Archival said.
