The local government of Samal Island is set to send a generator set to Talicud Island to help address the power crisis affecting residents in the area.

Samal Island Mayor Toto Reyes said the generator set to be deployed can produce at least half a megawatt of electricity.

Reyes said the generator set will augment the supply from the National Power Corporation (NAPOCOR), the island’s electricity provider, amid the ongoing power crisis experienced by residents, who have repeatedly raised concerns over the water shortage because the generator sets of NAPOCOR are reportedly deteriorating.

“Supposedly ang akong ipadala didto sa Talicud is duha kabuok ka... aaah... one megawatt nga genset ang problema ang NAPOCOR dili sila modawat kay tungod lagi ang ma-utilize didto nga kuryente is ang peak naa lang sa half megawatt dili sila modawat sa duha kabuok among ipadala nga dagko ang katong genset nga dako nga gipullout namo sa NORDECO gibutang namo sa asphalt batching plant ang katong sa asphalt batching plant mao toy dalaon sa talicud island mao toy gamiton,” Reyes said.

Reyes added that the local government is considering the use of solar energy because of the distance and challenges in connecting Talicud Island through submarine cable lines.

“Nag-talk nami sa Davao Light nangutana ko kung unsa ilang plano sa karon ang pinaka the best nga buhaton nga remedy is solar na siya kay medyo layo-layo ang submarine cable mas layo pani siya eh gikan Davao to Samal duol-duol lang pero Kaputian padulong Talicud layo-layo siya ang iyang option is solar sa,” Reyes added.

Meanwhile, the local government is also expediting the P50 million bulk water project to address the Talicus Island’s water shortage problem.

“Ang source sa tubig nga ginatan-aw namo didto is ang Baga Cave which is under the property ni Mario Reta ang mahitabo ang amoang technical team is ongoing nga nagapangita didto og dako nga source sa tubig siguro dapit sa tumoy katong sapa padung gihapon sa Baga Cave kato among ginatarget,” Reyes said.
