Animal welfare groups are sounding the alarm after a social media account is reportedly asking for donations for a dog that has reportedly already died.
The post shows how monetary donations can be sent through online transfer for the dog's medical expenses.
In the comments section, many expressed sympathy for the dog.
The problem, the animal welfare groups said, is that the dog in the photos has since passed away.
The dog was reportedly the one named “Tiktok” who became the face of animal cruelty in Negros Occidental in 2025 after it was hit by an arrow from what is known locally as "indian pana."
Tiktok underwent surgery and survived but, after several months, it got killed in a road accident.
In the social media post that is asking for donations, the dog is being called ‘Lala.’
“People will feel pity to the animal. Of course, they would love a rescue story, we want a happy ending. This is very viable and popular. Make sure that they get to visit the site of the shelter themselves. Where are these rescues being taken?” said Daniel Sam Salvatierra, an animal rights advocate.
The Regional Anti-Cybercrime Unit-NIR urged those who may have sent donations to come forward.
“Mga numbers, pictures, mga URL ng account. May mga personal tayo na tanong na victim lang natin ang nakakaalam. Lagi kaming naka-monitor, mayroon kaming cyber patrolling,” said Lt. Col. Rex Klinton Jamorol, Officer-in-charge of RACU-NIR.
The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) warned the public:
“Very important ang tinatawag na cyber hygiene. Hindi yung kapag may ibinigay sa ‘yong impormason, maniniwala ka kaagad. You can crosscheck, ang ginagamit natin na web browser, pwede tayong mag-doublecheck kung totoo ang information,” said Engr. Mary Jane Agonace, Provincial Director of DICT-Negros Occidental.
GMA Regional TV One Western Visayas contacted the number on the Facebook account in the hope of getting a statement from the account owner but calls were left unaswered.
