A critically endangered Philippine freshwater crocodile was rescued after it was found at a creek in Barangay San Isidro, Kidapawan City on Tuesday, June 2, 2026.

According to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-SOCCSKSARGEN (DENR-12), the wildlife rescue team of the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) Cotabato rescued the crocodile after it was spotted by a 16-year-old resident who was tying his goat near the creek.

Based on initial assessment, the reptile measured 5.7 feet in length and weighed 35 kilos. No visible injuries were found.

The crocodile was then transferred to the University of Southern Mindanao (USM) Wildlife Rescue Center for observation before it will be released into an appropriate habitat.

DENR-12 lauded the residents for reporting the incident promptly and following procedures in dealing with wildlife.

According to DENR-12, the Philippine freshwater crocodile is endemic to the Philippines and is considered one of the world’s most threatened crocodile species.

“Protected under Republic Act No. 9147, or the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act, the species faces ongoing threats from habitat loss and human activities,” DENR-12 said.

The public is urged to report wildlife sightings to authorities as timely intervention is vital in safeguarding endangered species and supporting conservation efforts.
