A powerful tremor marked the first day of classes in several areas of Mindanao and the Visayas after a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck off Sarangani around 7:37 a.m. on Monday, June 8, 2026.

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), the epicenter was located 05.57°N, 124.98°E - 032 km S 04° W of Maasim, Sarangani and had a depth of 33 kilometers.

PHIVOLCS added that the quake was tectonic in origin and damage and aftershocks are expected.

Meanwhile, PHIVOLCS has issued a tsunami warning following the earthquake.

DEATH TOLL

At least nine people were reported dead while 142 others were injured in General Santos City after a magnitude 7.8 struck off the coast of Sarangani morning on Monday, June 8, 2026.

Authorities said three people also remain missing, as of this writing.

During the tremor, several structures were damaged, including a building that housed several establishments on Pendatun Street, a mall, a school, and a two-story supermarket in Barangay Calumpang.

Cracks were also observed in the Sangguniang Panglungsod building.

According to the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), nine people died, 142 were injured, and three were missing, as of 3 p.m.

Meanwhile, several cottages at Ladol Beach Resort Alabel, Sarangani collapsed due to the powerful tremor.
