The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has issued a tsunami warning following a magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck off the coast of Sarangani at around 7:37 a.m. on Monday, June 8, 2026.
PHIVOLCS said the tremor is expected to generate waves more than one meter above normal tides, with higher surges possible in enclosed bays and straits.
PHIVOLCS added that the first tsunami waves could arrive between 7:37 a.m. and 9:37 a.m. and may persist for hours.
Residents in coastal areas of Sarangani, Davao Occidental, Tawi-Tawi, Sulu, Basilan, Zamboanga del Sur, Zamboanga Sibugay, Sultan Kudarat, and South Cotabato were advised to evacuate immediately to higher ground or move farther inland.
Boat owners in harbors and shallow coastal waters were urged to secure their vessels, while those already at sea during this period were instructed to remain in deep waters until further notice.
