The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has canceled the tsunami warning issued after the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck off Sarangani morning on Monday, June 8, 2026.

According to Tsunami Information No. 2 released at 3:19 p.m., PHIVOLCS confirmed that tsunami waves were recorded in several coastal areas following the earthquake, which occurred at 7:37 a.m. at a depth of 33 kilometers.

Sea level monitoring stations measured preliminary tsunami wave heights of 1.48 meters in Kiamba, Sarangani; 0.84 meters in Kalamansig, Sultan Kudarat; 0.48 meters in Maasim, Sarangani; 0.25 meters in Zamboanga City; 0.21 meters in Mati City, Davao Oriental; and 0.09 meters in Tandag City, Surigao del Sur.

PHIVOLCS said that after an extended two-hour observation period, only minor sea level disturbances continued to be detected. However, these wave heights were too small to cause significant damage.

As a result, the tsunami warning previously issued for coastal communities in several provinces has been cancelled.

Despite the cancellation, authorities urged residents in coastal areas to remain vigilant for possible strong aftershocks.

PHIVOLCS reminded the public to watch for natural tsunami warning signs, including strong ground shaking, a sudden rise or fall in sea level, and unusual roaring sounds from the sea.

Residents are advised to immediately move to higher ground if any of these signs are observed.
