The top official of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, said the entry of 18 former bodyguards of former Congressman Zaldy Co is being considered one of the security threats at the Senate.
NBI Director Melvin Matibag said this during his visit in El Salvador City, Misamis Oriental to lead the groundbreaking ceremony of the NBI office in Northern Mindanao.
Matibag explained that the presence of 18 former bodyguards inside the Senate premises is considered a security concern.
During a Blue Ribbon Committee meeting in the Senate on Monday, June 8, 2026, Matibag disclosed to senators from the new majority bloc that they had received information regarding a potential security threat in the Senate.
He also said that the NBI’s recommendation to tighten Senate security was based partly on what is described as unusual behavior observed among netizens on social media.
Matibag also challenged Senator Alan Peter Cayetano, saying he is willing to appear before the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee on Monday and that the senator has the right to question resources persons.
“Kung talagang gusto akong tanungin ni Senator Alan Peter Cayetano, I will be in the Senate on Monday attending the meeting ng Blue Ribbon Committee. Huwag na muna natin pagtalunan ang pagiging Senate President niya o hindi… he is a member of the Senate and he has all the right to be there. Matibag at iba pang resource person,” Matibag said.
Senate President Pro Tempore, Senator Sherwin Gatchalian, of the new major bloc, has ordered the implementation of a work-from-home arrangement for Senate employees due to an alleged security threat.
NEW NBI-10 OFFICE
Matibag visited El Salvador City, Misamis Oriental to lead the groundbreaking ceremony for the new NBI-10 office.
A three-story building will rise on a 2,500-square-meter lot donated by the local government.
Matibag said the agency has allocated P60 million for the project.
Aside from the El Salvador office, the NBI also held a groundbreaking ceremony for a satellite office in Iligan City and opened another office in Kauswagan, Lanao del Norte.
