Up to 10 foreigners were arrested in various areas of Siargao Island in Surigao del Norte for alleged violations of Philippine immigration laws.
According to the General Luna Municipal Police Station, the arrested foreigners include four Israeli, two Chinese, one Lithuanian, one Australian, one Moroccan, and one Nigerian.
Police said some of the foreigners were arrested for alleged overstaying and working without necessary permit.
Authorities added that other foreign nationals who are said to be undesirable aliens were arrested previously for crimes they allegedly committed, and reports were forwarded to the Bureau of Immigration (BI) for deportation proceedings.
BI said the Moroccan national is facing immigration charges as an undesirable alien in connection with his previous arrest for unjust vexation, direct assault, serious resistance and disobedience, among other offenses.
“The Philippines remains a welcoming destination for legitimate tourists, investors, and foreign visitors. Our people are known around the world for their hospitality. But that hospitality should never be mistaken for tolerance of those who choose to violate our laws. Those who abuse the privilege of staying in our country must face the consequences,” BI Commissioner, Joel Anthony Viado, said.
The foreigners are now under the temporary custody of General Luna Municipal Police Station and are set to be transferred to the BI detention facility.
“The filing of immigration-related charges and deportation proceedings are being handled by the Bureau of Immigration,” General Luna Municipal Police Station said.
