At least 90 houses were razed to the ground and more than 190 families were displaced when a fire hit a residential area in Barangay Lapasan, Cagayan de Oro City on Sunday, June 28, 2026.
The fire broke out at past 3 p.m. in Sitio Little Cebu and was raised to 4th alarm, as the houses affected were built close to each other and made of light materials.
One of the residents affected said the fire spread quickly.
“Di naka maka-penetrate sa sulod kay ang kalayo naa sa second floor nagtabok… na, makaagi ka kung kursonada ka pero naa ra sa imo, dili naka kabalik,” a resident affected, Julius Curit, said.
Authorities believe the fire started at the residence of the Gallardo family. The family was not at home at that time.
The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) has reached out to the family for a statement.
“Kini pud si Fernando Gallardo gikan nag duty alas 6 sa buntag ni uli siya 11 sa udto roughly before mag 2pm ni balik na pud siya ug duty,” Lapasan Fire Station Arson Investigator, FO2 Angelou Daisog, said.
The BFP is looking into an electrical problem as a possible cause of the fire. However, the investigation is still ongoing.
“Wala gihapon nato giwala kung naa ba nagluto pero dako ug porsyento kung dili intentional didto gyud ta sa electrical,” Daisog added.
The families affected are staying temporarily at the barangay covered court.
Damage to property is estimated at around P1.7 million.
