A 25-year-old councilor of Bayambang, Pangasinan died after his vehicle crashed into a concrete bridge barrier in San Carlos City evening on Wednesday, July 2, 2026, police said.

John Nazer David Junio was driving a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) along a road in Barangay Turac at around 11:30 p.m. when he reportedly lost control of the steering wheel and slammed into the bridge barrier.

Police said initial findings suggest the victim may have fallen asleep while driving, but investigation into the incident continues, as of this writing.

Lt. Col. Lawrence Keith Calub, officer-in-charge of the San Carlos City Police Station, said skid marks found at the scene indicate the vehicle swerved before it hit the bridge barrier.

“Puwedeng nakaidlip kaya nag-swerve siya papuntang kanan. Kitang-kita po sa place of incident na may skid mark. Sa pagkakatingin ko po, skid mark na po ng under chassis. So, sumadsad 'yung under chassis, then doon na tumama,” he said.

The impact left Junio with severe injuries to different parts of his body.

San Carlos City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officer Geraldine Arenas said responders immediately rushed to the scene and brought the victim to a hospital.

“Tumakbo na agad po 'yung aming staff at responders going sa scene po sa Barangay Turac. Binigyan po siya ng lunas ng mga responder, then tinakbo sa malapit na hospital,” Arenas said.

Junio was first taken to Pangasinan Provincial Hospital in Barangay Bolingit before being transferred to Region 1 Medical Center, where he was later declared dead.

Photos released by authorities showed the vehicle heavily damaged by the crash.

The councilor's family declined to give a statement.

Meanwhile, the Bayambang local government and Mayor Niña Jose-Quiambao extended their condolences to Junio's bereaved family.
