Several local government units in Cebu Island cancelled classes on Thursday, July 9, 2026, after volcanic ash from the Kanlaon Volcano in neighboring Negros Island reached Cebu.
A moderately explosive eruption that lasted three minutes occured at the Kanlaon Volcano early morning on July 9.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said the eruption generated a dark gray eruption plume that rose two to three kilometers above the crater before drifting to the general east.
Cebu Island is located east of Negros Island.
