The live-in partner of American marine biologist Kent Carpenter is considered a person of interest in his killing.
This is according to authorities in Negros Oriental in a report by Super Radyo dzBB’s Mark Makalalad.
Also considered a person of interest is the sibling of the live-in partner, according to Col. Timmar Alam, Director of the Negros Oriental Provincial Police Office.
Carpenter was shot dead inside his home in Sibulan town in Negros Oriental evening on July 12, 2026.
He and his live-in partner were watching television when three suspects entered the victims’ home in Barangay Ajong around 11:30 p.m.
One of the suspects shot Carpenter in the head.
But the Special Investigation Task Group (SITG) created to probe the case reportedly found inconsistencies in statement of Carpenter’s live-in partner.
Contrary to the woman’s claim that she was assaulted sexually, police said results of a medical examination showed otherwise.
And because the suspects did not harm her, police said it is possible that they know her.
Her sibling is considered a person of interest because the sibling would reportedly visit the victim’s house frequently.
The SITG is looking at robbery, as well as Carpenter’s work as a marine biologist, as possible motives in the crime.
The suspects allegedly took away money and jewelry from the house.
Carpenter's scientific work had contributed to the Philippines’ case in the 2016 arbitral ruling on the West Philippine Sea (WPS).
A respected scientist, various organizations have recognized Carpenter’s work, particularly his research on coral reefs and marine biodiversity. He was 73.
