The 17-year-old student who made threats against a school in Olango Island in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu will be made to undergo a psychiatric exam.

Atty. Maricar Ruñez, legal officer of the Department of Education (DedEd) Lapu-Lapu City Division, said this was recommended during the case conference with the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO).

“Nakita ang CSWD nga medyo naay psychological nga aspect sa iyang pagbuhat ato, ba, kay ingnon ta dili man na siya maoy normal nga thinking of an ordinary student,” Ruñez said.

During the case conference, authorities also found out that the student is actually the younger child.

This is contrary to the student’s claim that he has a younger sibling and that sibling was allegedly getting bullied in school.

The student’s post on social media on July 6, 2026 read:

“Basta dili ninyo hunungan og buly akong manghud pamatyon tamo pariha tacloban watch out netmhs karong taod2x pamatyon tamo lagot nako.”

The students is allowed to continue with his studies but only through alternative delivery mode. He is on his final year in senior high school.

Ruñez said the child’s aunt will get the modules from the school every Monday and return the same to the school at the end of the week.

“That will be the routine until such time that he will be recommended by the CSWDO nga fit na siya nga mobalik to school pysically,” Ruñez said.

The student has no prior record of violating the law nor has he been addicted to online games that show violence.

On July 13, 2026, the police and the school gathered the parents of the Nemesio-Epifania Taneo Memorial High School.

Capt. Vicente Chavez, chief of Station 1 of the Lapu-Lapu City Police Office, said they would want to reassure parents that the school is safe and there is no need to worry.

He also reminded parents to always keep an eye on their children, including the things they carry with them to school.

“Ilang i-check lang sad, ma’am, ba, ang bag sa mga bata bitaw and unya ato sad gi-kuan nga safety gyud ang school diri sa Olango kay naa man tay police presence nga gikuan gyud. Police visibility sa school nato, ma’am,” said Capt. Vicente Chavez, chief of Station 1 of the Lapu-Lapu City Police Office.

Meanwhile, Ruñez said they may have to revise the plan for a security drill in schools to make it like a seminar workshop type.

They are eyeing at students in Grade 9 up to senior high to participate in the activity.
