Authorities seized alleged smuggled foreign-brand cigarettes worth around P234.3 million in the waters off Lutangan Island in Olutangan, Zamboanga Sibugay.
According to the Naval Command Western Mindanao (NCWM), its personnel confiscated up to 1,436 master cases and 55 reams of foreign-brand cigarettes and the motorboat used in the transport.
In a Facebook post, NCWM did not disclose whether anyone was arrested during the operation.
The items seized were turned over to the Bureau of Customs (BOC).
“The seizure disrupted a large-scale smuggling operation that threatens government revenues, legitimate commerce, and the security of Western Mindanao’s maritime routes,” NCWM said.
NCWM said the operation highlights the agency’s commitment to preventing illegal traders from exploiting the region’s waters for unlawful profit.
“Western Mindanao’s waters will never be a safe passage for smugglers, and every attempt to use them for illegal trade will be met with decisive action,” NCWM added.
