The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is looking for temporary solutions to address the problem after a portion of the road in Sitio Marahan, Barangay Marilog Proper, Davao City collapsed on July 17, 2026.

During inspection on Thursday, July 23, DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon said authorities are looking for an engineering solution for the remaining section of the road to allow light vehicles and buses to pass.

Dizon said slope protection works on both sides of the road may begin on Monday, July 27, to ensure safe passage while a long-term solution to the problem is being studied.

“Meron pa namang natitirang anim na metro dito na maaaring daanan ng light vehicle… naghahanap tayo ng engineering solution na mabilis, temporary muna, para lang madaanan at yong mga kababayan na nasa bus hindi na kailangan bababa magbubuhat ng mga gamit na mabibigat maglalakad tapos sasakay na naman,” Dizon said.

Residents living on the opposite side of the area affected have been asked to evacuate after cracks were observed on the ground.

“Delikado naman kay ang sa unahan didto nagliki na ang yuta wala mi kaadtuan. Unta matagaan mi og bisag gamay lang matukuran para mabalhin mi,” affected resident, Vivien Canubas, said.

According to the barangay chairman, a piece of land has already been donated as a relocation site for the 11 affected families, including the five families whose houses also collapsed following the landslide, as well as those who need to be transferred for safety reasons.

“Naay family or clan nga nag-donate sa ilang kabalhinan sa biktima sa landslide ang floor area 70 [square meters] so tan-awon gyud kung sakto sila tanan didto sila iisa tanan for the meantime anaa sila sa shelter sa pahulayan ni Nanay Soling ang uban naa sailang direct families,” Barangay Marilog Proper Chairman Jeanette Suam said.

Authorities assured the families affected that assistance will be provided by the Department of Social and Development Office (DSWD) and Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DSHUD).

“Yung mga tinamaan na mga bahay tutulungan sila ng DSWD at tsaka ng DSHUD para may relocation at matulungan sila sa paggagawa ng bahay nila,” Dizon said.

Dizon said because of the reported landslides along the Davao-Bukidnon Road, a comprehensive study is required, which would need foreign funding to implement long-term solutions.
