Police are set to file charges against a 17-year-old student who allegedly made online shooting threats targeting several schools in Cagayan de Oro City.

The Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (COCPO) said the student has been turned over to the custody of the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO).

The student, accompanied by his parents, surrendered to authorities on Monday, July 27, 2026, to clarify that the threats he made were only a joke.

Despite this, COCPO said authorities will continue pursuing the filing of a case for grave threats in relation to cybercrime against the minor.

“File-lan gyud namo og kaso but pasayluon mi sa mga ginikanan mga parente ang iyang gihimo man gud dili maayo nakahatag og kagubot ba naa pay eskwelahan nga nag-suspend sa ilang klase. So, kung baga managot siya sa iyang gihimo,” COCPO Director, Col. Dexter Paje, said.

Police also continue to monitor the student’s companions who were also allegedly involved in making threats.

It can be recalled that at least five schools in the city suspended classes on Monday after online shooting threats circulated on social media and caused alarm among residents.

COCPO has heightened security measures in schools following the incident.

Meanwhile, police said they will also closely monitor reports of worsening gang-related problems in various schools.
